Postgraduate Facilities
Postgraduate Study Rooms
The School currently offers five postgraduate study rooms for use by research higher degree students. One room is designated a tutor room during teaching semesters but may be used by postgraduate students who can tolerate the disruption of student consultations. Most desk space is booked with the School Manager.
Computers
The School has a large resource room which has been set up as a postgraduate computer facility. Current equipment includes 3 Pentium PCs, 3 Macintosh computers, and 1 laser printer.
All computers are equipped with Microsoft Office, Netscape, Eudora and Endnote.
Students need an individual login identity to use the PCs and an individual folder on the local server. This ensures that all work is backed up automatically on a daily basis.
Photocopying
A PIN-operated photocopier is installed in the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Inquiry Office in the Old Quad building. Students are entitled to free photocopying of research material. Other photocopying facilities are also available on campus, including at the Graduate Centre and the Baillieu Library.
Telephones and Fax
There are telephones in the School for postgraduate use for internal and local calls related to research only. Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) or International Subscriber Dialling (ISD) calls need to be organised by administrative staff in the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Inquiry Office.
The Department has only one fax machine, shared by all staff and fax facilities are not generally available to postgraduates. Students will need the support of their supervisor to confirm the research need for fax use. Fax facilities are available in the Graduate Centre at a nominal charge.
After-hours Access
Students may apply to staff in the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Inquiry Office for an external door key to the Old Quad building.
Email
All students are strongly encouraged to use their e-mail address, as it is an important link between postgraduates, their supervisors and the School. E-mail accounts can be set up by following these instructtions for Activating Your Account.
Dial-in Computer Services
Dial-in access is available to PhD and Research Masters students, on application to the School Manager. Students are expected to limit access to ten hours per month, or $6.00 per month. The School Manager advises students whose use exceeds this quota and access is denied to persistent offenders who do not heed warnings. Students are issued with an Information Technology Services (ITS) publication, "Minimising Dial-in Costs", and are expected to take note of the advice it contains. All charges incurred are a direct cost to the School, and reduce by a corresponding amount the School's capacity to support students' research in other ways.
Communication
Students should not rely on information being mailed out to home addresses, as mail-outs are only used in exceptional circumstances. Most School information is communicated by e-mail, and this includes information which the School receives about travel grants, scholarships and seminars. Students should advise the School of Philosophy, Anthropology and Social Inquiry office of their e-mail address.
Financial Support
Please refer to information on travel grants and research support in the Grants and Scholarships section.
Other Study Spaces
The Graduate Centre has study rooms available for research students, for use on a time-share or room-share basis. Carrels are booked by the semester. Not all applicants are successful in getting study space; preference usually goes to students in the writing-up stage of their study.
The Baillieu Library has a limited number of carrels available to both Masters and PhD candidates. There is a waiting list; applications need to be lodged at the Inter-Library Loans desk. There are also limited opportunities for PhD students to obtain a shared office in the Baillieu; address enquiries to the Inter-Library Loan desk.
