Biography
Maree Pardy holds a BA and MA in Anthropology and Sociology from Monash University and a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Melbourne. In 2005 she completed her PhD on the transformations of gender and identity among Vietnamese-Australian women. Prior to joining the Gender Studies Program in 2007, she worked for a range of NGOs in the areas of community planning, housing and development, migrant and refugee community services, and international development education.
Current Research
Completing a monograph based on doctoral and ongoing research with Vietnamese-Australian women, entitled in-between imaginaries: Vietnamese-Australian women and their transformations.
Urban revitalization, public space and intercultural encounters with Prof. Ghassan Hage (Anthropology and Social Theory) and Prof. Ruth Fincher (Geography) – investigating the significant intersections between urban public space and cultural diversity.
Gender, diversity and urban public space – anthropological insights towards a research theory and method.
Teaching
Maree teaches in the areas of gender, identity, sexuality and globalisation. Subjects taught deal with contemporary feminist theory, theories of subjectivity, embodiment, social imaginaries and global politics and cultures. She has recently introduced a subject focusing on current global controversies around women, sexuality, feminism, multiculturalism, religion and secularism.
