Undergraduate study
Development Studies is an interdisciplinary program that addresses major issues connected with social, political and environmental changes in developing countries. It examines how these changes impact on the livelihoods and quality of life of both urban and rural populations. Students learn about a range of issues, including food and environmental security, debt and poverty, gender relations, culture and human rights, and globalisation and national sovereignty. Continual growth in the development sector, in organisations such as international aid agencies, non goverment organisations, and consulting companies, ensures this program is relevant and valuable.
Development Studies is available as a 75 point minor sequence in the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Students seeking a career in development are strongly advised to construct an undergraduate program that combines a minor in development with a major in one of the social sciences (for example, anthropology, economics, geography, political science, sociology).
