Future students

The information provided on this page is designed for prospective students considering undergraduate studies in Anthropology and/or Social Theory as part of their BA, or as breadth studies if enrolled in a non-Arts undergraduate degree course at the University of Melbourne.

Undergraduate studies in Anthropology are offered in conjunction with the Social Theory teaching program, which provides students with the opportunity to complete a Major or Minor sequence of study in Anthropology and Social Theory as part of their BA.

Alternatively, you can do just one or two Anthropology subjects to complement other areas of study within a Bachelor of Arts degree, or other degrees. Areas which recognise the value of a cross-cultural perspective by including one or more anthropology subjects in their options for a major include: Sociology, Social Theory, Australian Indigenous Studies, Development Studies, Women's Studies, Asian Studies and Australian Studies.

Entry to the BA

To enrol in the Bachelor of Arts degree, you need to meet the relevant Faculty admission requirements. This information and advice about when and how to apply is available on the Faculty of Arts website.

There are no prerequisites for undertaking Anthropology subjects at First Year level and you do not need to have studied Anthropology before.

Prospective students with an interest in Anthropology and Social Theory who do not intend to enrol in a degree course at this stage should consider undertaking single-subject study under our Community Access Program.

First year subjects in Anthropology

Detailed information about First Year level subjects and how to structure your course for a Major or Minor sequence in Anthropology and Social Theory is available at our undergraduate studies web page.
